A pear is a deciduous plant fruit and requires chilled climate to grow. The ideal places to grow these are the northern states of Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. For the variety that requires more than a month of chilled climate, the slopes of the Kashmir valley are an ideal location. Harvest comes in July and August. So watch out for this delicious fruit just after that.
As compared to a same sized apple, the pear packs a slightly more amount of calories. (135 against 115 for a mid-sized one). Including a medium-sized high-quality organic pear in a meal or as an in-between snack helps satiate the hunger and provides up to 12 percent of the daily required doses of vitamin C, vitamin K and about half as much of potassium, magnesium, and folates.
A classic French dessert – poached pears in red wine: Take about 4 or 5 pears and peel and remove the central core. You can order organic pear online and use them in this recipe. Mix ¾ cup sugar, 2 cups wine, 1 spoon vanilla essence, 2 tablespoons lemon juice and about half liter water. Mix it well and bring to a boil. Insert the cleaned pears already placed in the water and let them boil for about 10 minutes on each side till well cooked and easily poked by a fork. Remove the pears with a pair of tongs and let dry on a towel. Bring the sauce to a boil again and pour over the pears arranged in a shallow dish as per your preference. Serve semi-hot
