Bengal gram is closely related to chickpea family. It is a yellow lentil which is rounded on one side and flat on the other because of being split. The seeds are small and dark with a rough outer coat. It is widely cultivated in India, Mexico, Pakistan, and Iran. India is still leading in the production of the best quality Bengal gram. It is one of the earliest cultivated legumes. The flowers of this crop have blue, violet or pink veins.
