Toor dal or pigeon pea is a plant that is mainly produced in South Asia. It is one of the major sources of protein of the Indian subcontinent. A few other names are Arhar Dal, Rahar Dal, Rohor dal, Lahari, Orhor dal, and Tubarika. It is mainly cultivated in south India and dates back to 3500 years ago. It was originally called Congo Pea. Organic Toor Dal is very drought resistant and grows in low rainfall areas with minimum to no use of fertilizers, which makes it highly healthy and is good for you.
Organic Toor Dal contains a high quantity Thiamine which regulates heart function and plays a key role in using carbohydrates as a source of energy. Riboflavin is also present in toor dal which helps in oxygen transport in the body and maintains healthy eyes. Other health benefits are by the presence of choline and folate which is used for the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and the proper cell activity, respectively. Every 100 grams of Toor Dal provides us with at least 569 kJ of energy hence considered a superfood.
Organic Toor dal is usually a part of South Indian cuisine as it is used to make Sambar. It can also be used to make a variety of dal and eaten with a side of rice and veggies. Try making a chicken and pigeon pea salad by mixing both with some salsa dressing.
